    This is a fiesta in which a version of Calderón de la Barca's famous literary work, “The Mayor of Zalamea” is staged.

    The Mayor of Zalamea, Festivity of National Tourist Interest, is a popular fiesta based on one of the most important works of the Spanish Golden Age, which is played out by locals with great enthusiasm every year.

    The people of Zalamea de la Serena itself endow Calderón de la Barca's drama named after their town with life in Zalamea's own Plaza de la Constitución square in the second fortnight of August, thus recalling the town's past.

    In addition to the theatre, the other streets of Zalamea de la Serena are also full of the fiesta spirit. Locals of all ages recreate a craft market and a children's market in the castle, while the “arribalavilla” streets are also peopled with all types of characters from the time, such as blind people and their guides, troubadours and street music groups.
