A good fish population is a guarantee of food for the birds that live on and around this SPA.
Located in the south-west of the province of Badajoz, the Valuengo reservoir receives the waters of the river Ardila and some neighbouring streams, so there is no shortage of food for the birds. In surroundings with abundant broom where inlets of calm waters and islets form, numerous wading birds such as the cattle egret and the little egret have made their roost and breeding ground. In winter the trees on the river banks also serve as roosts for cormorants, and the waters of the reservoir are the perfect bed for cranes.
Numerous aquatic birds use the mass of water or surrounding area throughout the annual cycle, most notably the great crested grebe. Otters and both Mediterranean and European pond turtles are also commonly found in the area.
