Try some Designation of Origin cured ham and olive oil while enjoying the town's fiestas that are steeped in bullfighting tradition.
The town of Santibáñez el Alto, located in the province of Cáceres, was founded in the year 812. Over the centuries, it has been endowed with a rich historical heritage, including a 9th century castle of Muslim origin, a fortified villa of Templar origin, defensive walls, El Santo Cristo chapel, the pillory, the 15th century San Pedro Apóstol church, La Almenara tower and a most unusual bullring.
This spectacular town also boasts many other treasures, such as a natural swimming pool on the Arrago river and the Borbollón reservoir. The latter is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including cranes, which led to the founding of the Borbollón Biological Reserve. As well as wildlife watching, this natural paradise also offers you the chance to enjoy all kinds of water sports at the sailing school, which is located at the reservoir.
The best way to delve into the town's rich traditions is to attend some of its many fiestas, all deeply rooted in bullfighting, such as Los Santitos, San Juan, La Virgen del Carmen and Las Candelas. While enjoying the fiestas, you can also try some of the tasty local dishes, such as "migas" (fried breadcrumbs, usually served with chopped bacon and pork, chorizo etc), "moje" (a cold dish, usually based on red peppers), "caldereta extremeña" (a delicious local stew), Designation of Origin cured ham from Extremadura and Designation of Origin extra virgin olive oil from Gata-Hurdes. -
