This reservoir, which has the reverse cycle to other Mediterranean reservoirs, is a meeting point for birds throughout the year.
The Guadiana and the Aljucén are the two rivers that flow into the Montijo reservoir, which is at its fullest in summer with a lower water level in winter. Because of this peculiarity, many species of birds seek refuge here, either to feed, like the white stork and the little egret; during their prenuptial migration, like the great egret; or to spend their annual cycle here, like the mallard.
