A town in the north of Cáceres with its own language.
Eljas lies in the very heart of the Sierra de Gata mountains in the province of Cáceres. Crossed by a river of the same name, the town's surrounding areas are ideal for mountain sports activities such as hill walking and trails on horseback like the Puerto trail.
One of the main characteristics of Eljas is the use of “fala”, a Romance language spoken in three towns that comes from a mixture of Galician and Portuguese, with some input from the language of León.
The most important monument in the town is its 14th century castle beside the town's Plaza Mayor, which has been declared a monument of cultural interest. Also worth a visit are the local religious buildings such as the parish church dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the San Cristo and Divina Pastora chapels.
Local traditional architecture consists of a mixture of rural architecture and modern buildings, which can clash somewhat.
For those interested in local festivities, Eljas holds town fiestas in which people go around the streets on horseback, the procession of the Divina Pastora, San Bernabé or the Emigrant's Fiesta. -
