A Moslem fortress which passed into the hands of the Castilian Spanish, becoming at the time, the Casa de la Encomienda of the Order of Santiago.
The Miramontes Castle stands on a rocky outcrop in the municipality of Azuaga. This fortress belongs to the Islamic period, although the Moslems built the castle on the remains of Roman buildings. In time, its location gave it the name of Miramontes.
When the township of Azuaga was taken from the Moslems by the Master of the Order of Santiago, the house became the Casa de la Encomienda of the Order of Santiago for several decades, until the latter was moved and the castle was abandoned.
In 1494 the abandoned fortress was in such a ruinous state that Knight Commander of Azuaga took charge of restoring the castle.
Even though, in its day, it was a magnificent building, with a beautiful keep, several defensive doors and walls, towers, stables, water cisterns, patios, only a few remains are preserved today. You can still see two towers, arrow holes, a part of the containing walls and some of the foundations of what were interior rooms. -
