One of the first things to catch your eye when you arrive in Cáceres is the city wall, built many centuries ago by the Romans who left their mark on this city in many places and in many unique ways.
From their days of glory there still remain a number of sections built in dressed granite, especially noteworthy being the south or river bridge, known as the Arco del Cristo. There are also a number of masonry towers along the length of the walls.
In Roman times there were three gates along the wall, the Coria Gate, the Mérida Gate, both of which have already disappeared and a third which today has been converted into the Santa Ana Gate.
The original structure of the fortification was rectangular, and remains as such today. -
